Neuromuscular Ultrasound:
Improve your Diagnostic Accuracy

Live Webinar | June 15, 2023 | 7 pm (CEST) / 1 pm (EDT)
Neuromuscular Ultrasound: Improve your Diagnostic Accuracy

Inflammatory Neuropathies, Motor Neuron Diseases, and More

In this webinar, Prof. Nens van Alfen and Dr. Alexandra Borchert, moderated by Dr. Guillaume Fargeot, will discuss the added value of neuromuscular ultrasound for diagnosing patients with inflammatory neuropathies and motor neuron diseases. Ultrasound imaging of nerves and muscles is a recent addition to the diagnostic toolkit of the neurologist, physiatrist and nerve surgeon. In addition to its use as a primary diagnostic tool for entrapment neuropathies, imaging has been shown to augment your diagnostic capabilities in a significant way, making it easier to identify patients with treatable inflammatory neuropathies and creating more certainty for an ALS diagnosis. Using case-based scenarios, Prof. van Alfen and Dr. Borchert will show how your diagnostic practice can benefit from ultrasound.

Moderator: Dr. Guillaume Fargeot, MD
Neurologist, Clinical Neurophysiologist
Bicêtre Hospital
Le Kremlin Bicêtre, France

Guillaume Fargeot works as a Neurologist and has expertise in neuromuscular disorders and clinical neurophysiology. He finished his medical training in 2017, completing his thesis on plexus MRI in inflammatory neuropathies. From 2018 to 2022, he worked in two tertiary centers, specializing in neuromuscular disorders: Bicêtre and Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospitals in France. He uses ultrasound in daily practice, alone, or combined with electroneuromyography. Dr. Fargeot has special expertise in inflammatory neuropathies- a field in which he has contributed to numerous scientific publications.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Nens van Alfen, MD, PhD
Full Professor of Clinical Neurophysiology, Medical Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory
Radboudumc (Radboud University Medical Center)
Nijmegen, the Netherlands

Nens van Alfen MD, PhD, is a Neurologist and a Professor of Clinical Neurophysiology at the Radboud University Medical Center (RUMC), in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. She finished her medical training in 1997, and has been a Board-certified Neurologist at RUMC since 2004. In 2022, she was awarded a Professorship. Prof. Van Alfen is the Medical Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory and Coordinator of the Clinical Neurophysiology Residency Training Program at RUMC. She specializes in Neuromuscular Ultrasound, peripheral nerve pathology, brachial plexus neuropathies, and electrodiagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. The RUMC clinical neurophysiology laboratory performs 1200+ nerve and muscle ultrasound studies yearly and receives visiting clinicians from all over the world for short training programs in Neuromuscular Ultrasonography. Prof. Van Alfen’s current focus is on advancing muscle ultrasound and developing a national teaching and quality program for Neuromuscular Ultrasound in The Netherlands.

Speaker: Dr. Alexandra Borchert, MD
Consultant in Neurology
University Hospital Düsseldorf and Pauwelsklinik Aachen
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Alexandra Borchert is a Neurologist at University Hospital Düsseldorf and heads an outpatient neurological clinic at Pauwelsklinik Aachen, Germany. Her areas of expertise are Neuromuscular Ultrasound, diseases of peripheral nerves and muscles, multiple sclerosis, and clinical neurophysiology – specialisms that she has been focused on since 2006. Dr. Borchert has channeled her expertise in contributions to a number of scientific publications and book chapters. She is a DEGUM-Certified Instructor for Neuromuscular Ultrasound and is active in training programs in different countries. She has used Neuromuscular Ultrasound in daily practice in an outpatient setting, since 2019, and works together with surgeons specialized in peripheral nerve surgery and reconstructive microsurgery at the Pauwelsklinik in Aachen in Germany. In 2023, she also began working with a clinical focus on Neuroimmunology at the University Hospital Düsseldorf in Germany.
