Background information
Prof. Laurent Guibaud is a radiologist and Professor of Pediatric and Fetal imaging with special expertise in fetal brain and fetal CNS malformations in both ultrasound and MR. He is the Chief of the fetal imaging section of the of Fetal and Pediatric Imaging department of HFME, one of the main hospitals in France dedicated to children and mother, affiliated to University Claude Bernard Lyon. As one of most recognized international experts on fetal CNS, Prof. Guibaud has published more than 150 articles, mainly dedicated to fetal imaging, and delivered numerous lectures on CNS anomalies, especially at the ISUOG meetings. Prof. Laurent Guibaud is also member of the Fetal MRI Focus Group of ISUOG.

Presentation: Prenatal imaging approach to fetal cortex: from normal to pathology
The presentation will focus on normal and pathological fetal cortex and the interest of both ultrasound and MRI to analyze normal gyration as the main marker of brain maturation and depicted cortical pathologies, such as polymicrogyria, lissencephaly, simplified cortical gyration. It will also be presented how abnormal operculization can be demonstrated without any histological abnormality as a marker of abnormal CNS organization.

Background information
Professor Luc de Catte is currently the director of feto-maternal medicine of the University Hospital Leuven. He did his medical training at the University of Brussels and obtained his PhD in 2002 on Invasive Procedures in Multiple Pregnancies. In 2006 he joined the Fetal Medicine team in Leuven. His main interest are in ultrasound training, fetal brain and fetal therapy.

Presentation: A “cyst-ematic” approach to intracranial fluid-filled lesions
Cystic lesions are often easy to recognize on ultrasound because they appear as anechogenic usually rounded space-occupying lesions. Their etiology varies widely. In order to differentiate between cystic brain lesions, we’ll tackle them according to their localization: either supratentorial or infratentorial. In the cerebrum, cystic lesions appear in the ventricular system, the brain parenchyma or in the extra-axial space. The impact on neurodevelopment may vary significantly according to their appearance and etiology and may range from normal to severely impaired. Extended neurosonogram, fetal MRI and multidisciplinary approach will favor optimal counseling. The spectrum of posterior fossa “cystic lesion” has recently gained major attention in numerous papers. Differential diagnosis is sometimes hard, but crucial because of major differences in outcome. The brainstem-vermian angle on ultrasound may guide the diagnosis; however reliable data on neurodevelopmental outcome are often missing.

A systematic ultrasound screening is crucial for detection of these situations allowing a prompt referral for a complete neurosonographic evaluation and parent counseling. This presentation will propose a stepwise evaluation from axial screening to multiplanar neurosonography.
