Fetal Neurosonography: Three Essential Talks to Boost Your Confidence

Malformations of the Central Nervous System (CNS) are common and can often have a poor neurological outcome. As the fetal brain undergoes tremendous development during pregnancy it can be challenging in differential diagnosis of pathologies and often depend on examiner skills. The main technique for the diagnosis of fetal CNS anomalies is ultrasound. In specific cases the use of MRI plays a role as well.
This unique event brings together Fetal Ultrasound experts from all over Europe. They will address challenges you face during the examination of the fetal brain.
This webinar will boost your confidence while performing your daily routine ultrasound and your detailed neurosonography scan. Learn from Prof. Laurent Guibaud, Prof. Luc de Catte and Dr. Miguel Branco how to do a systematic ultrasound brain examination, to differentiate cystic brain lesions and learn about fetal cortex development in normal and abnormal cases.

Program
  • From screening to neurosonography: a stepwise evaluation, Dr. Miguel Branco.
  • A “cyst-ematic” approach to intracranial fluid-filled lesions, Prof. Luc de Catte.
  • Prenatal imaging approach to fetal cortex: from normal to pathology, Prof. Laurent Guibaud.

Learning Objectives
  1. Learn a step-by-step approach for fetal brain examination, how to differentiate intracranial cystic lesions and sense the importance to look at gyration for brain maturation and cortical pathologies.
  2. Get practical tips from the examples discussed to boost your diagnostic confidence.
  3. In the question-and-answer session, you could find answers that you need.

EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ON SPEAKERS AND THEIR PRESENTATIONS

Speaker & Moderator: Prof. Laurent Guibaud, PhD, MSc
Chief of the fetal imaging section of the Department of Fetal and Pediatric Imaging
Hospital Femme Mère Enfant - University Claude Bernard
Lyon, France

Background information
Prof. Laurent Guibaud is a radiologist and Professor of Pediatric and Fetal imaging with special expertise in fetal brain and fetal CNS malformations in both ultrasound and MR. He is the Chief of the fetal imaging section of the of Fetal and Pediatric Imaging department of HFME, one of the main hospitals in France dedicated to children and mother, affiliated to University Claude Bernard Lyon. As one of most recognized international experts on fetal CNS, Prof. Guibaud has published more than 150 articles, mainly dedicated to fetal imaging, and delivered numerous lectures on CNS anomalies, especially at the ISUOG meetings. Prof. Laurent Guibaud is also member of the Fetal MRI Focus Group of ISUOG.

Presentation: Prenatal imaging approach to fetal cortex: from normal to pathology
The presentation will focus on normal and pathological fetal cortex and the interest of both ultrasound and MRI to analyze normal gyration as the main marker of brain maturation and depicted cortical pathologies, such as polymicrogyria, lissencephaly, simplified cortical gyration. It will also be presented how abnormal operculization can be demonstrated without any histological abnormality as a marker of abnormal CNS organization.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Luc de Catte, MD, PhD
Clinical Director of Fetal-Maternal Medicine
Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics
University Hospital Leuven
Leuven, Belgium

Background information
Professor Luc de Catte is currently the director of feto-maternal medicine of the University Hospital Leuven. He did his medical training at the University of Brussels and obtained his PhD in 2002 on Invasive Procedures in Multiple Pregnancies. In 2006 he joined the Fetal Medicine team in Leuven. His main interest are in ultrasound training, fetal brain and fetal therapy.

Presentation: A “cyst-ematic” approach to intracranial fluid-filled lesions
Cystic lesions are often easy to recognize on ultrasound because they appear as anechogenic usually rounded space-occupying lesions. Their etiology varies widely. In order to differentiate between cystic brain lesions, we’ll tackle them according to their localization: either supratentorial or infratentorial. In the cerebrum, cystic lesions appear in the ventricular system, the brain parenchyma or in the extra-axial space. The impact on neurodevelopment may vary significantly according to their appearance and etiology and may range from normal to severely impaired. Extended neurosonogram, fetal MRI and multidisciplinary approach will favor optimal counseling. The spectrum of posterior fossa “cystic lesion” has recently gained major attention in numerous papers. Differential diagnosis is sometimes hard, but crucial because of major differences in outcome. The brainstem-vermian angle on ultrasound may guide the diagnosis; however reliable data on neurodevelopmental outcome are often missing.

Speaker: Dr. Miguel Branco, MD
Head of fetal ultrasound unit
Maternity Bissaya Barreto
Coimbra Hospital and University Center
Coimbra, Portugal

Background information
Dr. Miguel Branco is one of the reference doctors for Fetal Brain and Heart in Portugal. He is working closely together with leading experts from all over the world and gives presentations based on his research and experience. Dr. Branco is the Head of fetal ultrasound unit at Maternity Bissaya Barreto Coimbra Hospital and University Center in Portugal.

Presentation: From screening to neurosonography: a stepwise evaluation
Malformations of the Central Nervous System are among the most prevalent congenital abnormalities. A systematic ultrasound screening is crucial for detection of these situations allowing a prompt referral for a complete neurosonographic evaluation and parent counseling. This presentation will propose a stepwise evaluation from axial screening to multiplanar neurosonography.
