Presentation: The OCT Pathway: The South London Experience

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning will soon be integrated into the English National Diabetic Eye Screening Surveillance Pathway. This advancement will enable patients with mild maculopathy to remain within a surveillance pathway managed by retinal screening rather than being immediately referred to the Hospital Eye Service. Approximately 90% of these patients require only observation, not treatment.

These patients will be monitored every six months with an OCT retinal scan, graded by Diabetes Eye Screening Programme (DESP) practitioners.
This approach will help alleviate the strain on hospital eye services, allowing them to allocate more capacity to patients needing anti-VEGF injections or laser treatments.

Presentation: Analysing OCT Images and Getting Ready for the DESP Pathway Change

Adding Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to the Diabetic Eye Screening Pathway is an exciting development that will likely reduce the burden on patients referred to eye clinics without requiring treatment.
The key challenge is to ensure that all graders receive proper training in grading OCT images and making accurate referrals.

In this presentation, we will explore the thought process behind OCT image grading as we prepare for the implementation of the new pathway.
