Nens van Alfen MD, PhD is an associate professor of Neurology and clinical neurophysiologist from the Radboud University Medical Center (RUMC) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In 1997 she finished her medical training and she has been a board certified neurologist since 2004. Dr. van Alfen is the medical director of the clinical neurophysiology laboratory and coordinator of the clinical neurophysiology residency training program. Her areas of expertise are neuromuscular ultrasound, peripheral nerve pathology, brachial plexus neuropathies and electrodiagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. The RUMC clinical neurophysiology laboratory performs 1200+ nerve and muscle ultrasound studies yearly and receives visiting clinicians from all over the world for short training programs in neuromuscular ultrasonography. Dr. van Alfen’s current focus is on advancing muscle ultrasound and developing a national teaching and quality program for neuromuscular ultrasound in the Netherlands.

Alexandra Borchert works as a neurologist and has a special expertise in nerve and muscle ultrasound and clinical neurophysiology. In addition to her clinical work at the University Hospital Münster she focused on neuromuscular ultrasound in the diagnsosis of peripheral nerve disorders since 2007 and established this method in routine diagnostics. Since 2013 as a senior physician she was responsible for neurophysiology laboratory and neuromuscular ultrasound in Berlin, AVK Vivantes. Since 2019 she works in an outpatient setting with a focus on surgery of peripheral nerves and reconstructive microsurgery at Pauwelsklinik Aachen. She has contributed to numerous scientific publications as well as book chapters and is actively involved in training events.

In this webinar, neurologists will be introduced to the basics of muscle and nerve ultrasound examination of the peripheral nervous system. Standard imaging protocols of commonly affected nerves will be shown, and an overview will be provided of some common pathological findings. A few interesting case studies will be used to show the potential of ultrasound in advancing the care for patients with PNS disease.
