Day 1 | Successful Pediatric Imaging

September 5, 2023 | 7 pm (CEST) / 1 pm (EDT)

Successful Pediatric Imaging | CT/MRI

Getting it Right

Scanning pediatric patients can be challenging and require a specific and adjusted approach. Choosing the right imaging method is essential for obtaining feasible and diagnostic scans to guide clinical decision-making. In this regard, a strong collaboration between radiologists, radiographers, and referring clinicians is essential. This webinar will help you to choose the best imaging option for your pediatric patients.

Moderator: Prof. Erich Sorantin, MD, PhD
Head of Division of Pediatric Radiology
Medical University Graz
Graz, Austria

Background Information

Erich Sorantin, MD, was born in 1957 and after finishing high school, he studied Medicine at the University of Vienna graduating in 1982. Afterwards he worked in several hospitals, fulfilled training as general practitioner and became fully qualified as Pediatrician and Radiologist. In 1988, he joined the Radiology department at Medical University Graz, where he became a faculty member in 1994 and earned his professorship in 2002. Currently, Dr. Sorantin is the Head of the Division of Pediatric Radiology. Moreover, he coordinated a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary academic network in central Europe, which focuses on biomedical imaging and technology transfer of advanced pediatric care as well as radiation protection.

Dr. Sorantin was decorated with several awards and in 2018 he got a PhD honoris causa in Informatics from the Faculty of Science, Univ.of Szeged/HU. Dr. Sorantin has been married since 1984 and has three sons and three grandchildren.

Speaker: Dr. Izidora Holiar-Erlic, MD
Consultant Paediatric Radiologist
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Trust
Bristol, UK

Dr. Izidora Holjar-Erlic has a European training background, and she worked as a Radiology Consultant for five years in Croatia's Children Hospital, University Hospital Rijeka, before joining the NHS as a Pediatric Radiology Consultant at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children ten years ago. She has extensive knowledge and experience alongside passion and devotion, which was needed during her time at Tertiary Children Hospital in the Southwest of England, South Wales and South Gloucestershire. Her subspeciality interest is musculoskeletal radiology and fetal MRI which service she developed through the years. In her spare time, she dedicates even more work to the teleradiology company Everlight reporting on pediatric and neuroradiology cases.

Presentation Title: When to use CT in Pediatric Imaging?

Abstract: The majority of the questions in pediatric radiology can be answered with plain films (X-ray) or Ultrasound, the modality of choice regarding cross-sectional imaging in pediatric population. However, for some indications and clinical questions, usage of CT and/or MRI could be the only right first or additional imaging modality. There are some considerations regarding radiation burden, need for IV contrast, and soft tissue resolution, particularly in unenhanced scans and lack of information regarding soft tissue injuries in MSK cases. However, CT is fast and available, in many cases GA could be avoided. Imaging doesn’t need a consultant presence and can give some information which can’t be given by other imaging modalities. Indications and value of CT in pediatric radiology will be presented.

Speaker: Mr. Jonathan Green, Bsc (Hons), PgC
Superintendent Pediatric CT Radiographer
University Hospital Bristol and Weston, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
Bristol, UK

Jonathan Green has worked as a radiographer in pediatric radiology at the Bristol Royal Hospital for children (BRHC) for 20 years. In the last eight years, he was instrumental in setting up the first dedicated Pediatric/Neonatal CT scanning service in Bristol with an Aquilion ONE (Vision Edition) CT scanner. The service provides CT imaging with a wide range of specialties for the whole of the southwest of England, South Wales and South Gloucestershire. It is one of only five dedicated pediatric major trauma centers in England. Over the years, the service has grown to fully utilize volumetric scanning for the benefit of its patients including cardiac gated imaging and the only dynamic 4D airway CT service for pediatric patients in the UK.

Presentation Title: Practicalities of Undertaking Pediatric CT Scans

Pediatric CT scanning presents several challenges. This patient group is scanned less frequently than adults and as such there is less information around how to scan these patients effectively. This webinar will share some insights on key challenges to performing these scans such as avoiding the use of sedation and anesthesia, immobilization and distraction techniques and undertaking IV contrast scans. It will also cover some of the CT technologies available with Canon CT scanners that assist in reducing motion.

Speaker: Dr. Muriel Brun, MD
Pediatric Radiologist
Medical Imaging group ENOSIS / R2 Gironde
Bordeaux (Pessac) - France

Dr. Muriel Brun is a long experienced pediatric radiologist. After 18 years at University Hospital of Bordeaux (France), where she performed clinical pediatric radiology, but also education and pediatric research in fMRI and prenatal imaging, she now works for Enosis, a private group of radiologists. She continues to perform only pediatric imaging, in particular MRI on Canon's Vantage Galan 3T at the R2Gironde platform.

Presentation Title: Keys in Pediatric MRI

Abstract: Not all pediatric MRI examinations can be supported by a University Hospital, because of their overbooked schedule and the geographic presence of this kind of structure. That is why we must realize pediatric imaging in ambulatory and private structures. Dr. Muriel Brun will give you the keys to easy and good image quality pediatric MRI so you can also perform this challenging examination.
