Early Detection and Advanced Imaging for Gynecologic Cancers

Ovarian, uterine, cervical, and other gynecological cancers are among the most common cancers affecting women. 1
Unfortunately, many women may be unaware of the often vague symptoms or may hesitate to seek medical advice due to embarrassment or the stigma associated with these diagnoses. This has a big impact since early diagnosis is crucial, as it significantly impacts survival rates and quality of life.

By sharing knowledge on the latest technologies and best practices, we can enhance early detection and provide more effective treatments to minimize the impact of these cancers. To keep sharing this knowledge, we organized the second webinar of the “Breast and Gynecology Days”, focused on gynecologic oncology.

Day 2 | Gynecologic Oncology

Ultrasound / MRI
October 31, 7 pm (CET) / 2 pm (EDT)

Mark your calendar and join Prof. Testa , Prof. Moro , and Dr. Olmane as they discuss gynecologic oncology through the lenses of ultrasound and MRI. The experts will share their insights on cutting-edge technologies for screening and imaging-guided therapy, offering practical guidance to improve patient outcomes.

Register now for this second appointment with the "Breast and Gynecology Days," the webinar series made possible by the Canon Medical Academy.

Presentation: Preoperative ultrasound assessment of patients with gynecological cancer

Ultrasound is the primary imaging tool for assessing ovarian masses, effectively differentiating benign from malignant adnexal masses and guiding patient management. It has emerged as an alternative to contrast-enhanced CT and WB-DWI/MRI for staging ovarian cancer, with experienced examiners accurately predicting carcinomatosis and surgical outcomes.
Ultrasound is also pivotal in evaluating endometrial and cervical cancers, offering detailed cancer invasion mapping that informs tailored strategies such as radiochemotherapy versus surgery, including fertility-sparing options.
Advances in ultrasound now include artificial intelligence and radiomics. In the future, high-frequency ultrasound is likely to play a role in the management of these women.

Presentation: Advanced MR imaging in Female pelvic oncology: diagnostic insights and Clinical Application

Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women globally, with most cases and deaths occurring in low-to-middle-income countries. Persistent HPV infection is the primary risk factor, responsible for 99% of cases, and another risk factor is HIV. Symptoms may include vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, and dyspareunia, although it can be asymptomatic. Diagnosis is made through cervical cytology and biopsy.

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological cancer. The FIGO staging system is used for surgical staging, and MRI plays a key role in treatment planning and follow-up by providing vital information on tumor characteristics, invasion, extrauterine extent, and lymph node status.

Ovarian carcinoma is the 2nd most common gynecological malignancy and the 5th leading cause of cancer death in women. High-grade serous cystadenocarcinoma is responsible for most ovarian cancer deaths. When ultrasound results are inconclusive, the positive predictive value of cancer can range from 7% to 50%.
