Comprehensive Insights into Diagnosing and Managing Pelvic Floor Disorders

Pelvic floor disorders can arise from various causes and have significant effects on daily life, leading to challenges such as incontinence, immobility, and chronic pain. With the aging population in the Western world, the number of individuals suffering from pelvic pain and related disorders is expected to rise. In the United States alone, the cost of ambulatory care for women with pelvic floor issues is estimated at $412 million per year. 1

Despite its impact, pelvic floor pathology is often overlooked as a potential cause of chronic pelvic pain. Early detection is crucial, as it can significantly improve symptoms and guide appropriate clinical management. A thorough understanding of pelvic floor anatomy, the common symptoms associated with these disorders, and the selection of suitable imaging techniques are essential components of the diagnostic process.

This webinar aims to provide insights into the common indications for pelvic floor imaging, the most appropriate diagnostic modalities, and real-life imaging examples. By enhancing your understanding of these crucial aspects, this session will equip you to better manage and treat pelvic floor disorders.

Presentation: Diagnosis of Somatic Maternal Birth Trauma by Dynamic Pelvic Floor Ultrasound

Maternal birth trauma due to vaginal delivery can be psychological and/or somatic, occurring more frequently than globally assumed. Somatic birth trauma includes episiotomy, perineal tears, levator ani muscle avulsion, and obstetric anal sphincter injuries. Trans-perineal and exo-anal ultrasounds allow objective and accurate evaluation of somatic birth trauma in routine clinical practice.

This presentation will focus on the dynamic ultrasound diagnosis of levator avulsion and anal sphincter trauma. The obtained ultrasound data may be used as the performance indicators for maternity services, increasing the awareness of obstetric trauma among maternity care providers and enabling the development of improved primary and secondary prevention strategies.

Presentation: Getting to the bottom of Pelvic Floor Imaging

Pelvic floor pathology is often overlooked as a potential cause of chronic pelvic pain. Early detection of pelvic floor pathology can often significantly improve patient’s symptoms and allow for appropriate clinical management. A good understanding of pelvic floor anatomy, common presenting symptoms and appropriate investigation choice is of paramount importance during the diagnostic process. Keeping patient care at the cornerstone of clinical practice is imperative and can only be achieved through high-quality diagnostic studies.

The aim of this presentation is to explain the common indications and appropriate imaging modalities used in the diagnostic process of pelvic floor pathology, complemented with imaging examples.

Presentation: Imaging of the Pelvic Floor – the Role of Ultrasound in Urogynecology

The role of Ultrasound for the assessment of pelvic floor dysfunction is rapidly growing and attracting significant interest due to its non-invasive nature and increasing diagnostic capabilities.
This versatile imaging tool is invaluable for assessing pelvic floor disorders, such as fecal incontinence after obstetrics sphincter injuries, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and complications related to previous vaginal mesh surgery. Offering detailed views of pelvic anatomy and dynamic function, ultrasound aids in perioperative evaluation and surgical planning.
Recent advancements in 2D and 3D ultrasound technology have further enhanced its role, allowing for more accurate diagnosis and management.
